Music, autism & the brain: is music therapy effective in increasing social communication in autism?

Together with Dr. Megha Sharda, postdoctoral fellow, and her supervisor Prof. Krista Hyde at the International Laboratory of Brain Music and Sound (BRAMS) and Université de Montréal, we will, for the first time, use both brain imaging and behavioural measures to investigate the impact of music intervention on children with autism. In collaboration with Westmount Music Therapy, children aged six to twelve with ASD will receive either music or creative arts therapy over a period of 12 weeks. The children will be tested both before and after the intervention on a range of measures to gauge the effectiveness of music therapy on social communication skills.
